The thesis defense consists of two very different parts: writing the thesis and the preparation of the defense specification. While you have a lot of creative control of your thesis, it is generally the goal to explain the work you have done in the Grade School and put it in the wider context of your field as a whole.

The details of the expected structure and contents obviously vary depending on their special discipline. The average length seems to be in the low to medium-sized 100s, although I saw theses as short as 60 pages and more than 300 pages. The best advice I can give about writing is that the thesis should start early. It is always a good idea to notes when you progress through research, and you can include these notes in a thesis file while it is fresh in your head.

As for the defense representation, this is generally a minute presentation of the content of your work (either an excerpt or an overview). The main point of the presentation is to highlight the specific contributions that you made to the field instead of explaining the previous work from others. Since the Committee will ask questions during / after the presentation, the entire defense usually takes between 1-2 hours.

You are responsible for communicating the Front Office (currently Kelley-Key) to plan your thesis defense that you try about a month before the expected Defense Date. The Committee consists of five members: Your consultant (the chair of the committee is), two other members of the physics and astronomy department as well as two external members from other departments. Technically, your advisor should offer recommendations for committee members, although this is not always in practice.

As soon as a committee is selected, coordinate between you to select a date and share the Front Office. Your thesis should be fully written at least two weeks before the Defense Date and submitted to your committee. You do not have to send your presentation to you in advance.

After they happen, two "readers" (their consultant and another committee member) must sign a form, suggesting that they have fully read their thesis. You should not have to do anything, but occasionally professors are unaware of the exact protocol and forget to sign this form, so they must hunt them down later.

In the next week, you must create all edits requested by your committee, and submit your thesis to the library.All JHU theses must now be electronically submitted in PDF / A format. This is not the same as a standard PDF and must be specifically formatted. The library offers a small amount of help to properly format your thesis, but you do not provide support for latex. I strongly recommend that you can find a copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro (there are public computers in the library and warrior computer lab you have installed) and used with the Preflight tool to a standard PDF PDF in PDF / A convert.

If your thesis is in the right format and accepted by the library, you're done! There are a few administrative steps to sign up for the conclusion, but the front office can help you. Good luck!
